Enjoy Our Private Beach & Secluded Kite Launch Area

As our guest, you have exclusive full access to our private beach and the two patio areas where you can relax when you’re not out on the water. There’s plenty of room for preparing your kites and the beach is deep enough to easily launch and land your kite. Located between the busy launch spots of the town beach and the hot springs, Pelican Reef offers you more space to enjoy yourself on the water.

Kite Catcher

To make sure you are looked after on the beach, we have our own Kite Catcher. He’s on the beach every afternoon when the wind is blowing and is our resident expert when it comes to launching and landing your kite.

Secure Gear Storage

We have secure storage for guest’s equipment at the Kite hangar right on the beach so it’s there and ready to go the next day. Once you’ve rinsed and stored your gear, you can head up to the bar for a well earned drink!

Private Restaurant & Beach Bar

Breakfast, Lunch and Happy Hour are available most days with the best views of the Sea of Cortez and all the action, plus the best Margarita in Baja! Be sure to sign up for Burger Night on Fridays with live acoustic music.

Additional Activities

Some equipment is available free to residents

Yoga

Start your day the Namaste way. We have the perfect Yoga space with ocean views on the deck just above the kite school. The area has a roof, so you won’t overheat in the sun as you stretch into your day. For those new to Yoga, various instruction classes are available nearby in La Ventana.

Snorkelling

The Sea of Cortez is often described as “The World’s Aquarium”, so make sure you bring a mask & fins and go see for yourself! There are several shallow water reefs close to the shore near Pelican Reef Ventana. Don’t forget your underwater camera if you have one!

Sea Kayaks

If Stand Up Paddleboarding is a bit too wobbly for your liking, maybe you’ll enjoy spending a little time out on the water with a chance to sit down. Why not try a Sea Kayak? They’re easy to use, and you’ll be off exploring in minutes. FREE to residents.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

In Baja the wind typically picks up in the early afternoon, so the mornings are great for exploring the clear, calm beauty the Sea of Cortez has to offer. Stand Up Paddling is good for core strength and it’s safe and easy to learn. FREE to residents.

Kiting Adventures on request!

Hot Springs Downwinder…

We fill up our modified Suburban known as “Debbie Downwinder” and truck everyone up to the Hot Springs about 4 miles north of Pelican Reef. It’s a great spot to launch from. Once everyone is rigged up and ready to go they can cruise and play all the way home to Pelican Reef beach before grabbing a beer at our beach bar.

It’s loads of fun and a really good way for everyone to get to know each other out on the water.

Boat Trip to Cerralvo Island…  and Kite home

An all day project we organise for our more confident kiters

We depart Pelican Reef at 10am with a boat ride to the Island. We stop for lunch on the island, followed by a short kiteboarding clinic on the beach before rigging all the equipment. Once we are all set up it’s an epic kite session as we all ride back to Pelican Reef together. It’s about 10 miles (15km) in a straight line and takes around an hour to kite back.

There is plenty to see and do in the La Ventana area when you are not out on the water or just fancy an adventure.

Offsite Activities

Whale Shark Boat Tours

Just 45 minutes away by car, the nearby city of La Paz is well known for the opportunity to swim with Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the world, measuring up to 10m (30ft). Known as the Gentle Giants, these creatures visit the Bay of La Paz as they feed in the plankton rich waters.

Swimming with Whale Sharks can be a magical and awe-inspiring experience, no matter your age, it will be something you never forget.

Mountain Biking

La Ventana is quickly becoming a hot spot for mountain biking in Mexico with over 100km of scenic desert mountain bike trails. Leave right from the door and be on the trails within 10 minutes in both directions. Mountain bike rentals are available close by.

Fishing Excursions

Our neighbours offer daily fishing excursions including spearfishing out to Isla Cerralvo and beyond. The Sea of Cortez is renowned for its abundant and diverse marine life. Jacques Cousteau called it “The World’s Aquarium”.

Hiking the Desert

South of La Ventana is a huge desert featuring the mighty Cardon cactus. They are the largest cacti in the world and some have been measured at almost 21 meters (70ft) weighing up to 25 tons. They are so amazing we named one of our Casitas after the mighty Cardon!

Scuba Diving

Cerralvo Island is the southernmost island in the Sea of Cortez and offers scuba divers of all skill levels a chance to explore its pristine reefs, bays & beaches and the incredible marine life that inhabits them. PADI courses are available on request.
